Before buying an American Cocker Spaniel you must first decide if it is the right pet for you and your family. This breed needs between 30 and 45 minutes of grooming at least once a week. Regular visits to a professional groomer is essentual if the coat is left long.

Get references for the breeder or pet store your intending to use. Never buy the first cute puppy you see. If you choose a kennel, visit it before making a purchase. A buyer should see how the kennel is run and maintained, the condition of bitches and Sires, and ask to see any paperwork the kennel owner has. The paperwork should consist of registrations, pedigrees, shot records, and a good health guarantee form for your potiental puppy.

A good breeder will breed for health and temperment. Watch the puppy you plan to purchase. See how it interacts with it litter mates and Dam. Check for any visible congenital defect. Look for such things as over bites, under bites, and droopy eyes. These can be signs of poor breeding and could affect the future health of your potential puppy.
